These sturdy plastic hoops with covered screw area are perfect for hand embroidery.
The 8813 size is 4-3/4" round and the 8812 is 7" round. They are made with a ridge to keep the hoops from pressing all the way through to the far side.
These are the nice heavy weight wooden quilting hoops. They are about 1-1/8" deep.

These are sturdy plastic embroidery hoops in bright colors. One advantage to this style is that they are hard to break, and also they are washable, and don't retain the oils from your hands which smear onto your embroidery with use.
